Thoughts on reading

Between the pages

Three short reading ideas for attention, imagination and conversation. Try one with your next book.

01 · Reading time

Reading aloud is a conversation

Turn a page into a shared discovery.

Read the idea

Reading aloud does not require finishing every page without interruption. An image, an unexpected turn or an unfamiliar word can begin a conversation.

Ask an open question: “What do you think happens next?” Give the answer time. The point is to imagine, not to predict the plot correctly.

At the end, each person can choose a favourite moment. You may have noticed the same thing, or something entirely different. Both are good reasons to keep talking.

02 · Reading time

Understand a character without agreeing

Why disagreement can make a story more interesting.

Read the idea

A character does not have to be likeable to be interesting. Often it matters more that we begin to understand a desire, fear or experience behind their choices.

Separate two questions: “Do I understand this choice?” and “Do I think this choice is right?” The answers do not have to match. That tension can be part of a story’s appeal.

Try retelling a scene through another character’s eyes. What information disappears? What becomes more important? This makes the effect of perspective tangible.

03 · Reading time

What stays after the last page

Three questions to take beyond a book’s ending.

Read the idea

A book ends, but your engagement with it may continue. Before giving it a rating, take a moment to reflect on the reading experience.

Which scene do you remember most clearly? Which question remains open? Which sentence would you show someone who has not read the book?

Write a few lines or share your answers. Returning to these notes later can reveal how your own perspective has changed.
